Authorities in Eastern Province uncovered in the center of Dammam Saturday what they believe to be the largest warehouse store of illegal firecrackers in the region. Police said the site constituted the main supplier of firecrackers for the whole city. In Asir, Civil Defense officials have been targeting sellers of firecrackers and confiscating their wares, warning parents to prevent their children buying and using firecrackers which “can cause burns as well as fires”, while three days ago a large haul was made in the Al-Balad district of Jeddah, with police describing some of the items as “powerful enough to blow a hand or foot off”, and the storage site as a “hazard to neighboring buildings”. Crackdowns on the materials are being conducted across the Kingdom ahead of the Eid holidays when firecrackers are extremely popular with children.
