COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Sri Lanka has named left-handed Upul Tharanga to replace retired Kumar Sangakkara in the third series-deciding Test against India starting Friday. Sangakkara quit international cricket after playing the first two games of the series, which is level 1-1. Captain Angelo Mathews said Thursday the management is still discussing other changes in the team, including whether to hand hard hitter Kusal Perera a Test debut in place of Jehan Mubarak. Also, off-spin bowler Tharindu Kaushal is doubtful for the game at the Sinhalese Sports Club having injured the thumb of his bowling hand during the second Test. In his absence, Dilruwan Perera will take the second spinner's slot. India's team director Ravi Shastri said his team would go all out for a series win after its comeback victory in the second Test. India also has two replacements to its lineup because of injuries to Murali Vijay and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. Karun Nair and Naman Ojha take their places in the squad. Green top India and Sri Lanka were, however, left to ponder the behavior of an unusually greenish wicket as they delayed naming their lineups for the decisive final Test. The traditionally high-scoring pitch at the Sinhalese sports club (SSC) has undergone a dramatic change in appearance from a brown, flat track to a moisture-laden one that sports a tinge of grass. Mathews refused to hazard a guess on the relaid pitch even though the last time the host played a Test at the SSC a year ago, it swamped Pakistan by 105 runs to break a sequence of four successive draws since 2009. “After being relaid the wicket has a bit more carry,” he said. “As of now, there's a bit of grass on the wicket. You can't really predict a wicket 100 percent. We just have to play it by the ear. “It looks a sporting wicket. We just have to play positive cricket. The batters have to look to score runs, bowlers have to take wickets. We have to get the basics right.” “It's far from being a finished product yet,” Shastri told reporters after inspecting the pitch before practice Thursday. “There is still quite a bit of grass on it, but there could be another cutting of grass. Only then can we decide who to play.” — Agencies
