ARLINGTON — The New York Yankees came back with a vengeance Tuesday, parlaying an 11-run second inning into a 21-5 triumph over the Texas Rangers in the American League. Trailing by five runs after the first inning, the Bronx Bombers came up with the highest-scoring second inning in club history and a rout was on. Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius delivered a career-high four hits to go along with three runs-batted-in and two runs scored. Yankees right fielder Chris Young belted a grand slam and two doubles, posting a career-high five RBIs. Left fielder Brett Gardner hit a two-run homer in the ninth and scored a career-best five runs for a Yankees team that garnered 19 hits. Just as impressive was the performance of rookie pitcher Diego Moreno, called up from the minor leagues before the game. He came in with two outs in the first inning and didn't give up a hit in 5 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first major league win. The Rangers, now a major league worst 16-28 at home, didn't get a hit after the first frame. White Sox 9, Red Sox 4: Jose Abreu had an overturned replay review for a two-run home run after center fielder Mookie Betts tumbled into Boston's bullpen and the ball fell out of his glove, helping the Chicago White Sox spoil Pedro Martinez's number-retirement night with a 9-4 win over the Red Sox on Tuesday. Left fielder Melky Cabrera went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and single, first baseman Abreu had three hits, and catcher Geovany Soto added a solo homer and reached base five times with three walks for the suddenly surging White Sox, who won their sixth straight. Other results: Rays 10, Tigers 2; Royals 2, Indians 1; Astros 10, Angels 5. National League Mets, 4, Padres 0: Rookie right-handed pitcher Noah Syndergaard retired the first 18 batters he faced and ended up allowing three hits over eight shutout innings as the New York Mets beat the San Diego Padres 4-0 at Citi Field. The win was the third straight for the Mets (52-48) while the Padres (47-53) had a three-game winning streak snapped. Marlins 4, Nationals 1: Jose Fernandez improved his career home record to 15-0, leading the Miami Marlins past the Washington Nationals 4-1 at Marlins Park. Fernandez (4-0) struck out five batters and allowed four hits and one run in six innings. He pitched around four walks, which tied his career high. In 23 career home starts, Fernandez has a 1.19 ERA. His streak of unbeaten home starts to start a career is the longest in the majors since 1914. His mark of 15 consecutive home wins to start a career is one short of the Major League record. Reds 4, Cardinals 0: Reds frst baseman Joey Votto busted up a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning with a three-run homer, giving starter Mike Leake all the support required to post a 4-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Other results: Rockies 7, Cubs ; Brewers 5, Giants 2. Inter-League Phillies 3, Blue Jays 2: Shortstop Andres Blanco drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning and left-hander Adam Morgan pitched six innings as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2. It was the fifth win in a row for the Phillies (38-63) and the second loss in a row for the Blue Jays (50-51), who got a home run from second baseman Devon Travis before Travis left the game in the third inning with a shoulder injury. Orioles 7, Braves 3: Chris Davis homered twice and drove in five runs — all in the first two innings — as the Baltimore Orioles extended their winning streak to four games with a 7-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves in an interleague match-up. Davis belted a three-run homer in the first that gave the Orioles (50-49) the lead for good and followed that with a two-run shot the following inning, both off Braves starter Julio Teheran. That was the 10th multi-homer game of Davis' career and the third this season. Other results: Pirates 8, Twins 7; Athletics 2, Dodgers 0; Diamondbacks 8, Mariners 4. — Agencies
