Samir Ali Khairi Makkah Online How long will the roads and streets of Makkah continue to experience such high levels of traffic chaos? The streets are packed with vehicles and full of traffic jams, especially during the rush hour. It is annoying seeing people drive recklessly when behind the wheel. I have received many comments from readers about the traffic on our roads. Here are some of them. I hope the Makkah Traffic Department will take them into consideration: 1. There are only a few traffic officers on streets during the rush hour and in the evenings. When an accident takes place, it is a least a few hours before a traffic officer shows up. 2. Heavy vehicles, owned by large contracting companies in Makkah, use the roads at times of the day when they should not be using them. In fact, you see them on the roads of the city 24 hours a day. They hold up traffic and increase the likelihood of road accidents. Some of these accidents are serious and claim the lives of innocent people. Trucks drive at high speed and do not care about accidents as they are confident that insurance companies will cover them and pay for damages. 3. Heavy trucks often travel at high speed on roads in and around the Al-Shawqiya and Al-Iskan intersection. The trucks are owned by a contracting company situated in that area. They are on the roads at times when they should not be. In other countries, trucks are only allowed to use roads between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. when the streets are empty. There should be regulations in place to punish violators. They should be fined and imprisoned and their licenses should be confiscated. 4. Speed bumps are usually placed near schools, hospitals or malls in a way that does not damage vehicles that go over them. Many home owners in Makkah have placed speed bumps near their houses when they should not be doing so. As a result, the city seems like one that is full of speed bumps. The bumps damage vehicles. People who place speed bumps near their homes without the permission of the municipality should be fined.
