I am writing with regard to the report "Annual leave must include transport allowance" (Apr. 12). With all these amendments to the Saudi labor laws that are favorable to workers, the local labor offices must guarantee the speedy disposition of the complaints that will be filed by workers as employers may refuse implementation. Otherwise, new cases will be added to existing cases that have already been waiting for months for resolution. Emil G. Sarmiento, Online response There have been several announcements of changes to the labor laws in the past by the Shoura Council, but 80 percent of them just go into files and are never implemented. There have been many announcements, such as that family status will depend on salary and not profession and that there will be salary scale realignment for government employees. The present announcement is that the latest change will be effective in six months, but the article makes it sound like it has already been implemented. It is better not to announce things until they are finally approved and have been put into effect. Mansoor, Online response
