Peterson back in SA Test squad
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 03 - 12 - 2014

JOHANNESBURG — Three uncapped players have been named in a 14-man South African Test squad announced Tuesday to face the West Indies later this month, while left-arm spinner Robin Peterson has been recalled.
Left-handed batsman Stiaan van Zyl looks set to make his Test debut in the first Test starting at Centurion on Dec. 17, while batsman Temba Bavuma and fast bowler Kagiso Rabada may have to wait for a chance.
Van Zyl, who was part of the South African Test squad but did not play on tours of Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, is likely to replace fellow left-hander JP Duminy, who will miss the first Test because of a knee injury.
Selection convener Andrew Hudson said he was pleased with the performance of the Test squad in winning series in Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
Peterson, 35, played the most recent of his 15 Tests against Australia in February but made way for leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who was then superseded by off-spinner, Dane Piedt, who had outstanding match figures of eight for 152 on debut against Zimbabwe in August. But Tahir has fallen out of favor, while Piedt has not played during the current season because of a shoulder injury.
Hudson said the recoveries of Duminy and Piedt were being monitored and it was hoped Duminy would be available later in the three-match series. The West Indian squad was due to arrive in Johannesburg Tuesday and will begin its tour with a three-day match against a South African Invitation-XI in Benoni, starting on Dec. 10.
Test squad: Hashim Amla (captain), AB de Villiers (vice captain), Alviro Petersen, Dean Elgar, Faf du Plessis, Stiaan van Zyl, Quinton de Kock (keeper), Vernon Philander, Robin Peterson, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Temba Bavuma, Kyle Abbott, Kagiso Rabada.
Tour itinerary:
Dec. 10-12: South African Invitation XI, Benoni; Dec. 17-21: First Test, Centurion; Dec. 26-30: Second Test, Port Elizabeth; Jan. 2-6: Third Test, Cape Town; Jan. 9: First Twenty20 international, Cape Town; Jan. 11: Second Twenty20 international, Johannesburg; Jan. 14: Third Twenty20 international, Durban; Jan. 16: First ODI, Durban; Jan. 18: Second ODI, Johannesburg; Jan. 21: Third ODI, East London; Jan. 25: Fourth ODI, Port Elizabeth; Jan. 28: Fifth ODI, Centurion.
Smith to replace Gayle
Devon Smith is to replace the West Indies injured star batsman Chris Gayle in the squad for the tour of South Africa the selectors announced Monday. Smith, 33, has represented the West Indies in 33 Tests since making his debut in 2003 against Australia in Guyana.
Gayle is the second experienced player the squad has seen drop out as Dwayne Bravo pulled out last month citing personal reasons.
The series against South Africa will be the first for the West Indies since it quit India four matches into a five-game, one-day series in October after a pay dispute between players and the board, with a Twenty20 international and three Tests to play. — Agencies
