JEDDAH — Three months after it began, the number of Filipinos who have registered for the overseas voting in the western region of Saudi Arabia crossed the 5,000 mark, Philippine consulate officials said.
Consul General Leo Tito Ausan said a total of 5,082 Filipinos have registered until Aug. 31 since the registration for the 2016 presidential elections started in May.
Ausan said the aggressive campaigns being conducted by different Filipino community groups in the Kingdom contributed to the good registration turnout.
All citizens of the Philippines abroad, who are not otherwise disqualified by law and at least 18 years on the day of voting, are eligible to register for overseas voting. The filing of application for registration started on May 6 and will continue until Oct. 31, 2015.
During the opening of the Overseas Filipino Basketball League on Friday, Ausan encouraged the participants to file their applications for the overseas voting registration so they could vote in the upcoming presidential election.
Ausan said the consulate would do its best to accommodate all Filipino residents in the western region of Saudi Arabia who wants to participate in the registration process.
