MAKKAH — A number of residents here have complained about illegal residents who repair cars in various locations, Makkah daily reported. They said these illegal residents charge much lower charges for repairing cars, attracting plenty of customers. They perform engine and car body repairs for charges that are as much as 50 percent lower than legal workshops. The mayor of the Al-Mansour neighborhood, Fawzi Al-Hashmi, said lack of inefficient street lighting further encourages these people to run their businesses. He noted that he has reported these activities to local authorities, which have conducted a number of campaigns and detained a number of the illegal residents. Spokesman for Makkah Municipality, Usamah Zaytooni, said the local authority conducts periodic campaigns with other concerned bodies to monitor such locations. Makkah Police spokesman Capt. Ali Al-Zahrani said that there are special search and investigation teams to monitor locations where these illegal residents run their businesses. He added that the campaigns are continuing to monitor all locations and detained illegal residents are handed over to the authorities. Meanwhile, authorities have also clamped down on illegal residents in some localities. Several residency law violators and workers not working for their original sponsors have been arrested in the crackdown.
