The analysis of Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed in “Teachers are exploited everywhere” (April 4) and the outlook of M.J. Akbar, in “The exploitation of Teachers” (April 12) have opened new chapters for educationists and authorities to debate upon. These views really throw light on the troubles through which the teachers are passing through. Today a hundred billion dollar question is that who should ultimately take action against the managing committees? Who should provide justice to teachers who are really getting exploited by those who do not know what education is. These committees are elected by parents in a pure democratic way through elections. The elected members after getting a seat are further exploited by those who give them vote and power. The elected committees, to oblige the parents, do whatever the parents demand. Few committee members become part of school systems to benefit their relatives and friends and in this way the whole system gets corrupted. If we look back in the past, the system of election to form school managing committee was not there. The Ambassador used to nominate few cultured and highly qualified intellectual parents and used to constitute the governing body of the schools. This body used to work independently but under the supervision of the embassy. Then there was no regionalism or discrimination. The schools used to run smoothly producing excellent results. But after the election system began, the condition of teachers, principal and schools has become untenable. Today there are many private community schools in the Kingdom which are indirectly governed by Saudi sponsors and the state of affairs and results in such schools are far better than the schools governed by the elected bodies. The teachers and principals of such schools are paid low but have mental peace and job satisfaction and no fear of so called higher boards or chairmen. The question then arises is what's the need of elected committees in community schools? Why can't the embassies stop elections and begin nominations? Why can't the principals be given full authority to run the schools? Why should uneducated and biased people be allowed to rule highly qualified and learned principals and teachers? The intellectuals and officials should give a serious thought to this grim situation. It's the right time that such useless and unfair elected managing committees of the community schools should be dissolved and the era of nomination should again begin. This will be good for the learners and educators both. Shaikh Zakir Hussain, Jeddah
