The article "Saudization and expatriates" (July 17) was indeed an eye-opener. I think Saudi citizens are capable of doing all sorts of works; they only need to change their attitude. How did their forefathers survive in the Kingdom before oil was discovered here? Money has changed everything. Less effort and more comfort and luxury, this is what most Saudis seem to be looking for. If you go to a supermarket, you can often see an expatriate worker pushing a trolley and a Saudi following behind. The problem here is that everyone want to be in high society. Jim, Online response II. We do appreciate and are very thankful for the expatriates who have helped in the development of the country, and who are still doing so today. However, to imply, as the author of the article has done, that Saudis cannot replace expatriates, is a shameful sin. Saudis are beginning to wake up to reality, but it is a very slow process that will take years. However, it is certainly not helpful when academics, writers, and officials express their denial of the capabilities of Saudis to undertake the work that expatriates are doing. How about some encouragement for a change! T. Tawfiq, Online response
