RIYADH — The Saudi Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission (NRRC), in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held a workshop on nuclear law in Riyadh on Monday. The workshop dealt with legal frameworks and their international obligations as per a number of international documents such as treaties, agreements, and resolutions that enhance national capacities to control nuclear facilities and materials, radiation practices, and sources. The workshop also discussed aspects of nuclear security and safety, determinants of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, and civil liability for nuclear hazards. Several experts and specialists from a number of relevant authorities, such as the Bureau of Experts at the Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Energy, the Public Prosecution, and the Saudi Bar Association, attended the workshop. The national nuclear regulations in the Kingdom include the Nuclear and Radiological Uses Control Law; the Civil Liability Law for Nuclear Damage; the National Law for Combating Terrorism and its Financing; and the organization of the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission. All these come within the framework of three national policies: the National Atomic Energy Policy; the National Waste Management Policy, and the National Occupational Safety and Health Policy. Collectively, these regulatory oversight frameworks are known as Nuclear Law. The Nuclear and Radiological Uses Control Law has issued 17 technical regulations.
