Inter close gap on Milan, Totti hits 200 goal mark

Inter Milan closed the gap on leaders AC Milan to just two points ahead of the top of the table city derby in two weeks time with a 1-0 victory over lowly Lecce on Sunday. Giampaolo Pazzini scored the only goal of the game seven minutes into the second period to close even further a gap that once stood at 13 points.
And it now means that Inter could go top for the first time this season if they beat their bitter rivals when Serie A resumes after next week's international break. It has been a remarkable comeback for Inter as they search for a sixth scudetto crown in a row having appeared out of the title running in December.
And, following Milan's shock 1-0 defeat at Palermo on Saturday, Italy could even have a three-way fight to the end if Napoli beat Cagliari in Sunday's late game. That would see the top three separated by just three points. Inter were far from their best against Lecce as they struggled to raise their game following their dramatic late efforts in the 3-2 success at Bayern Munich in midweek that saw them through to the Champions League quarter-finals on away goals.
Daniele Corvia had the best early chance for Lecce but flicked his shot wide of the near post.
Wesley Sneijder bent a free-kick over the wall at the other end but he too curled it past the near post.
Pazzini struck just a minute after Lecce goalkeeper Antonio Rosati had made a brilliant one-handed save low to his right from the striker's free header from eight yards.
But with his second chance he controlled the ball with his chest as he burst past his marker and fired across Rosati into the far corner.
Julio Cesar had to come to Inter's rescue late on as he blocked a point-blank shot from Andrea Bertolacci.
Earlier Francesco Totti scored his 200th Serie A goal for Roma but it wasn't enough to inspire his team to victory at Fiorentina.
Twice the hosts led through Adrian Mutu and Alessandro Gamberini, who scored his first goal since 2007, but Totti netted from the spot and then added his 201st league strike after the break.
One-club man Totti, who is sixth on the all-time Serie A scoring list, just four goals behind Roberto Baggio, said there's plenty more to come.
"The numbers speak of a great career in which I've always wanted to honour the same shirt," he said.
"I'm proud of what I've done but I'm not stopping there. I always try to do my best."
The point did little to help either side's respective ambitions as Roma remain out of the Champions League qualifying places and Fiorentina short of the Europa League spots.
Fiorentina will feel aggrieved that they didn't take home the three points having had a goal ruled out for offside and twice hit the bar.
They took the lead on 21 minutes as Philippe Mexes missed the ball and Mutu took on Juan on the outside before shooting home between goalkeeper Doni's legs.
The lead lasted only six minutes before Gianluca Comotto clumsily brought down John Arne Riise in the box, with Totti despatching the resulting penalty to reach the 200 mark.
However, Fiorentina went back in front on 34 minutes when Mutu got his head to a corner ahead of Riise, the ball hitting Simone Perrotta and falling to Gamberini, who had lost marker Juan, to rifle home.
Only two minutes later Roma were level again as everyone missed Riise's cross from the left with Totti finding himself unmarked at the back post and with time enough to control the ball, shift it onto his right foot and thrash home a cross-shot.
